National Animal Identification System (NAIS)

The USDA, and therefore the AZ Dept of Ag  and the extension offices, are starting to implement the NAIS (National Animal Identification System).   For most livestock (e.g. sheep, cattle, swine), eartags and registration numbers are tracked from birth to auction.   Since horses do not follow this same pattern, its taken a bit to figure out just what & how to implement tracking.     The intent is to have a 48hr trace-back mechanism once a diseased animal is detected.

This is not a 4-H program, but a national program being run through the Dept of Ag. and basically replaces state specific hauling cards with an electronic system.     4-H, as a state funded organization under the University of Arizona, will definitely have new requirements added as a result of this program.   Nothing in concrete right now, but just FYI.

  • US Animal ID Program Home Page.   This site has powerpoint presentations on the state of each animal working group, including the various organizations involved, their status and deadlines.    I've converted a couple to pdf below, but if there is one not here that you would like, just let me know.
