Hippology
[what
is it?] [what do you do?]
[are there competitions?] [Design
Your Own Facility ]
What is Hippology? Who can join?
Do I need to own a horse?
-
Hippology is the study of horses
-
All
Queen Creek 4-H riding horse members are automatically
considered part of this discipline, and can attend one or all of
the meetings and functions
-
This
portion of the horse project, along with Horse Judging, is also
open to youth who love horses, but do not own or have access to
one
[Hippology]
-
Our
goal is for you to learn about horses! Our area has some of the
best rider’s in the state, but we want you to be the most
knowledgeable, too!
-
In
the fall, we will prepare you for the written proficiency, going
over every detail on the study guide!
-
Each
meeting includes a recreation activity. We often play games
such as charades, horse pictionairy, do crosswords, watch
videos, and even have the opportunity to practice for Quiz Bowl
Members have FUN while learning!
-
We
will teach you about different breeds, conformation, and caring
for your horse
-
We
will also cover veterinary science information – from parasite
control to immunizations to reproduction!
-
We
often work directly with horses, and our members have the
opportunity to do demonstrations to teach others
-
We
also hold and/or attend several clinics each year,
with professionals such as veterinarians, equine horse
therapists, farriers, etc. This past spring, we visited Dr.
Chatham’s breeding farm in Queen Creek, and were able to see
mare ultra-sounds and learn about the breeding process!

-
Yes,
in February of each year there is a county-wide Communication
day, with a Hippology Contest as well as a Quiz Bowl Event
-
Competitions are not required, but we encourage all members –
even the youngest member – to participate
-
Some
Horse Judging competitions also include a written “test”, and
Hippology will help you prepare for that, too!
